Roses and Lilies- A match made in heaven

Roses and Lilies have been paired together in homes, gardens, and florist arrangements for years: but why?  The two make very good companion plants when planting a spring garden. The bold, nodding lily flowers contrast with the sprays of roses. Lilies tend to start blooming at about the same time as roses, so you will get both fragrance and visual pleasure of both.  In homes and arrangements, the two flowers have very complimentary colors and can make a great accent to any spring decoration. There is some symbolism in the arrangements, both flowers symbolizing love, though a little differently.

Flower meanings

Red Rose:  The color, shape, and budding of a rose are all associated with different symbolic meanings. Each rose color, and even the rose blossom shape and age (i.e. rose buds as opposed to fully bloomed roses), conveys a different meaning or silent message from the giver to the recipient. The red rose symbolizes romance, love, beauty, and courage. A red rosebud signifies beauty and purity. A thornless red rose means love at first sight.   Lilies:  Lilies throughout many cultures represent purity and abundance, though each color has its own special meaning and representations.  Pink lilies symbolize femininity, admiration, and prosperity.

History

Red roses are one of the most widely cultivated flowers in the world. According to the fossil record, we can trace the history of the rose back 35 million years. Throughout the centuries they have been part of mythology, medicine, and even war. Every culture has its own legends about the powers and origins of the red rose, but most are linked in some way to gods and stories of romance and heartbreak.    Lilies are among the oldest cultivated plants. In Asia 2nd millennium BCE the bulb of the Madonna lily was cultivated for use in a medicinal ointment; the ancients raised the bulbs of this species for food. The Greeks and Romans grew it for ornamental and medicinal purposes. Throughout time Lilies have been used in various religious practices, wedding ceremonies, and adorned churches and holy places, widely thought to be a symbol of purity and godliness.

Home care for your flower arrangement

When you bring home a new flower arrangement or get a thoughtful gift from a loved one, it’s important to know how to care for it to make sure it lasts longer, stays fresher, and more beautiful.  Here are some tips on keeping flowers in a vase in your home.
  • Replace the water in your vase with fresh, room temperature water frequently.
  • Keep your flowers in a cool place that gets some sunlight to keep them cool and happy
  • After a week, trim the bottom of the stems of your flowers to allow them to absorb fresh water and nutrients.
  • Make sure your vase stays full of water!
